The auto world lost a legend when Carroll Shelby passed away two weeks ago. In honor of Shelby’s passing, this week on Wide Open Throttle, host Jessi Lang takes a look back on the life of Shelby.
Lang starts at Shelby International headquarters in Los Angeles with a look at Carroll Shelby’s personal collection of vehicles. We get an inside look at the Shelby Series 1 (the only car to be designed and built from the ground up by Shelby), the last Shelby Cobra to roll off the line (which was equipped with an automatic transmission, oddly enough), a late-model Ford Shelby GT500, and one of Shelby’s earliest GT500 Mustangs.
Lang then describes some of Shelby’s many career accomplishments. He was a pilot in the Army Air Force during World War II, ran a dump truck business, and was an oilman, a farmer, a racecar driver, an automotive designer, and a race team manager.
